Didier Deschamps’ Pre-French squad announcement comments on RMC’s ‘Luis Attaque’

Here are the interesting comments made by France national coach Didier Deschamps on RMC Radio’s football show ‘Luis Attaque’ today, a few days ahead of his squad announcement for France’s matches vs Georgia and Spain.

On Bacary Sagna: ‘Sagna is not even back in training for Arsenal yet, he is coming back from a knee injury. He is currently submerged in a complicated situation in terms of potential selection.’

On Spain‘We will of course play to beat them, but they are definitely the best team in the world.’

On Georgia‘Of course we will approach the Georgian game differently to the one against Spain. They are at different levels of ability. Ideally we will beat Georgia. It gives us the greatest platform on which to build for the Spain game a few days later.’

On Raphael Varane‘I wanted to give Varane his first French cap in our friendly against Germany by playing him for some minutes. Unfortunately he was injured. In the first part of the season he had limited game time so I was reluctant to pick him. Now he is a regular starter for Real Madrid. If I pick him, he could definitely start for our team. He represents the future of the French national team. It is important to note that up until now he has no international experience and the games coming up are not friendlies.’

On Philippe Mexes: ‘He has said some interesting things to the press lately. All of the players are free to express themselves. He has refound his top from. He is on the preliminary lost of players we are considering. I do not blacklist players.’

On Lucas Digne: ‘Lucas Digne is also on our preliminary list. He is just 19 but has great potential.’

On Paul Pogba: ‘He is in the same category as Varane, they are of the same generation. He has massive potential and has racked up about 20 Serie A appearances and 6 Champions League ones this season. Of course he is also at Juve. Will I pick him? Potentially yes, even though he has no international experience.’

On Patrice Evra: ‘I have no problems with Patrice, but he will not be my captain and he has been made aware why.’

On Karim Benzema‘Those critics who say he does not deserve to be part of the France team tactically and footballistically shock me. Our team needs a Karim Benzema in a great vain of form.’

On tactics‘I have no main worry for us. At the top level, solid defending is the base of everything else. Going forward comes naturally with understanding and coherence.’

On qualifying from the group: ‘That is my mission, I am not thinking about anything else. However I am realistic and pragmatic. I am not a dreamer.’

On picking the squad: ‘I have a long list of candidates. The night before the announcement, I usually have all but 1 or 2 places in the squad figured out. The rest, I sleep on it.’
