Dijon FCO have officially announced the signing of defender Nayef Aguerd in a busy 48 hours for the club. The Moroccan defender joins from Fath Union Sport de Rabat on a three year contract after a successful four years with the first division side.
Still just 22-years-old, Aguerd has seen plenty of experience in Morocco and the rest of Africa. The young defender has already been capped by his nation once, and has been a key cog in former Moroccan international Hoalid Regragui’s FUS Rabat side since 2014.
Aguerd played a major part in his club’s success domestically, appearing in 21 matches during their 2015/16 league title win. He was also a member of the Moroccan national team that won the Total African Nations Championship in February of this year.
Walid Regragui, manager of FUS Rabat, was himself a Dijonnais during his playing career. His connection to “the Mustards” helped push Aguerd’s move to France, as he was able to speak to his young defender’s ability.
In the official announcement on Dijon’s website, club recruiter Sébastien Larcier detailed Regragui’s influence, explaining, “We talked to Walid a lot about the characteristics and state of mind of Nayef…and Walid also recommended Nayef to join DFCO by highlighting the play produced by the team and the environment of the club.”
A quick, promising, left-footed centre back, Aguerd is “very excited to start training” and called Dijon the “best club for my development.” If the Moroccan can mirror his former manager’s time in Dijon, then he will certainly be a success in France.
