Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas gave a strange answer when quizzed about the future of Captain and defensive midfielder Maxime Gonalons, who is in contact with Napoli we understand.
Initially, it was believed that Maxime Gonalons would not be looking depart from Les Gones until the summer, but Aulas’ latest comments have cast doubt over this:
‘I have already said that I have not received a single offer for Maxime Gonalons. One thing is for sure: if there are no departures, there will be no arrivals. If there are departures, that does not necessarily mean there will be arrivals. We have a lot of youngsters who are not currently playing.’
Jean Michel Aulas then went to some length to explain the outcome of his contract extension talks with Yoann Gourcuff:
‘I have not sorted out the case of Yoann Gourcuff. I wanted to extend his contract, in a reasonable way and in a way that reflects on his contribution to the team. That would invoke a sensible salary reduction.’
‘I accept that while he is not responsible for the current salary he is on, because he accepted it at the time, that we can not offer him the same terms again. Nothing has been resolved.’
Barring a complete turnaround in events, it does not appear as if Yoann Gourcuff and Lyon will agree to a contract extension.
One man that Jean Michel Aulas is more confident about convincing to extend his contract is the team’s manager Remi Garde:
‘Remi knows that the board wants him to sign a new contract. We have discussed it, but he says to me: ‘For me to sign a contract extension, I must earn it first.”
January is overall likely to be a busy period for Les Gones, with the future’s of Gonalons, Briand, Gomis and Gourcuff all unresolved.
