Karim Benzema: “Pogba listens to what I tell him”

Karim Benzema gave a press conference and Les Bleus’ training base at Clairefontaine yesterday. Here is what he had to say:

On facing Ronaldo and Portugal: ‘With Ronaldo it’s a case of coming up against the best player in the world but Portugal are a great side all over.’

‘It’s always good to come up against big teams and, even though it’s down as a friendly, it’s still a prestigious game.’

‘Advice for defenders facing Ronaldo? Intercept the ball before it reaches him.’

‘You can’t compare Ronaldo and Messi, they’re not the same type of player.’

‘Ronaldo doesn’t surprise me anymore. He’s got so much quality, he’s the best player in the world.’

On Ronaldo’s recent praise for him: ‘I’m happy about that, it’s nice. It’s not just a PR thing.’

‘Ronaldo knows football and he genuinely believes the things he said about me.’

On playing for France: ‘The key thing for me with the national team is winning and being influential – scoring goals and making key passes.’

On the competition in the squad: ‘There’s always competition for places. Whether it’s [Loic] Remy, Giroud or Gignac with the national side, it’s always there because we have so much quality.’

On Varane: ‘He’s progressing and working hard. He’s young and he’s playing for the biggest team in the world.’

‘I’m not worried about him, he’s gradually getting back to top form. He’s one of the best defenders in the world.’

On his World Cup performances: ‘I had a very good World Cup and I’m happy about that. I wanted to make the difference.’

On the idea of Barcelona playing in Ligue 1: ‘Barca in Ligue 1? I think it’s best if they stay in La Liga.’

On Pogba: ‘Pogba listens to what we tell him. He can go on to become one the best players in the world in his position.’
