It seemed so unlikely as close as last night, but Leicester have completed the signing of Riyad Mahrez from French side Le Havre. Reports last night suggested that talks had fallen through between Leicester and Le Havre, but the deal was saved in the eleventh hour. Leicester have their man, and now we wait to see what kind of impact he can have on the other side of the Channel.
So, how will Mahrez fit into Leicester? Well, judging by this current season at Le Havre he will fit in just fine. He moves from the second tier in the French league, where he had 2 goals and 4 assists in his 17 games this season, to a Leicester side with high hopes of promotion themselves to the top tier of English football. An exciting, daring talent with an abundance of trickery and pace combined with an understanding of the game and an intelligence which is perhaps currently unparalleled within the French second division, at 22 years of age, Mahrez is a player for the future who, if he flourishes at Leicester, could become very good indeed.
In the immediate future, Mahrez will offer a different type of option in the attacking midfield spots at Leicester, and beef up their squad as we head into the business end of the Championship season. Whether he is a success already this season or not remains to be seen, but what is sure is that Leicester have a very promising talent on their hands.
