Ligue 1 LIVE: 1/2/2014

21:00: Well, after a truly stunning day of Ligue 1 action, it is time for me to sign off. After tonight, I cannot wait for next Saturday to arrive, but until then, Au Revoir!

20:55: Well, what a second half of Ligue 1 action that was! 14 second half goals in just 5 Ligue 1 games, and we had story lines aplenty today. Lowly Sochaux grabbing a stunning win against Nantes, Bastia coming back to beat Guingamp, Ajaccio equalising at the death to earn a vital point, Montpellier out-scoring Reims in a 6 goal thriller and St-Etienne breezing past Valenciennes with ease. I honestly cannot remember such a hectic 45 minutes of football.

20:52: FULL TIME: Sochaux 1-0 Nantes, Bastia 3-2 Guingamp, Evian 1-1 Ajaccio, Reims 2-4 Montpellier, St-Etienne 3-0 Valenciennes.

20:48: GOAL: St-Etienne 3-0 Valenciennes (Mollo). Insult to injury now for Valenciennes, as Mollo grabs St-Etienne’s third goal. Game well and truly over.

20:47: GOAL: Evian 1-1 Ajaccio (Tallo). Wow, what a story this is! Ajaccio, the league bottom club, conceded what we all thought was the winner with 5 minutes to go, but they have responded admirably and Tallo grabs a late equaliser!

20:45: GOAL: Bastia 3-2 Guingamp (Boudebouz pen.) It looks like that Cisse miss (see 20:41) will not prove costly after all! Boudebouz buries a pen. to put Bastia in the lead!

20:43: GOAL: Evian 1-0 Ajaccio (Ruben). Harsh on lowly Ajaccio, who were clinging on a bit, but Evian take the lead at the death. Ruben is on hand to provide a low finish past a helpless Sissoko and that could be game.

20:41: Close: New man Cissé really should have scored a third for Bastia there… He has a free header just a few yards from goal, but he cannot direct his effort on goal and Guingamp survive. Will that be costly?

20:39: GOAL: Bastia 2-2 Guingamp (Squillaci). Apologies to Guingamp fans out there, I really tempted fate didn’t I? They only have themselves to blame, though, as poor marking allows Squillaci a free header on goal, which he steers past Ndy Assembe in the Guingamp net. Bastia back on level terms, the next goal will win this match.

20:35: LAST 10: We are entering the last 10 minutes now around the 5 grounds. Bastia and Sochaux both within 1 goal of clinching a point, while surely whoever scores in Evian vs Ajaccio will be leaving with the 3 points. Great chance for the league’s bottom side to snatch something here…

20:30: Such has been the theme in this second half, I am surprised there has not been a goal in the last 3 minutes! Valenciennes are throwing everything at St-Etienne to try and pull a goal back, but it just isn’t happening so far. Their latest attack breaks down as the linesman gives offside on Waris.

20:26: GOAL: Reims 2-4 Montpellier (Niang). Yet another goal in Reims, but this time it goes to Montpellier! Niang has deserved a goal for his general play today, and he gets a crucial one here as he finishes calmly past Agassa.

20:25: I think it’s probably about time I mentioned the Evian vs Ajaccio game now, considering it is our only goalless game so far. It looks unlikely to stay that way though, with both sides pushing for that opening goal.

20:22: GOAL: Reims 2-3 Montpellier (El Kaoutari O.G.). It just doesn’t stop, does it! Reims pull a second goal back, and now trail Montpellier, who had lead 3-0 remember, by one goal. We could have a stunning story on our hands here.

20:20: Well that was absolute madness!!! 7 goals in the first 15 minutes of this crazy second half! What does Ligue 1 have in stall for us over the last 30? My fingers can’t take much more…!

20:17: GOAL: Saint-Etienne 2-0 Valenciennes (Corgnet). Two goals either side of half time there for St-Etienne, who are slowly pulling out of sight from Valenciennes. It is Corgnet this time with the goal, but Valenciennes will be disappointed with their marking for both goals today.

20:15: GOAL: Reims 1-3 Montpellier (Ayite). Reims pull one back after Ayite manages to beat Joudren. Still a massive ask for the home side here, but at least they have cut the lead to two.

20:14: GOAL: Reims 0-3 Montpellier (Cabella). Cabella with his second, surely game over now. But wait, Reims aren’t done yet…

20:12: GOAL: Bastia 1-2 Guingamp (Alioui). Unbeliavable! We have 3 goals within 5 minutes, and Guingamp retake the lead! It is Alioui once more who fires emphatically past Landreau.

20:10: GOAL: Bastia 1-1 Guingamp (Ba). It didn’t take long for Bastia to respond! After some nice passing, new signing Cisse has the ball on the edge of the box. He decides to pass it to Ba on the right hand side, who finishes into the far corner calmly!

20:08: GOAL: Bastia 0-1 Guingamp (Alioui). Guingamp manage to take the lead too, but in slightly fortuitous circumstances! The ball is crossed from the left and finds its way to the back post to Alioui, who scuffs his shot but sees it fly over the helpless Landreau into the net!

20:05: GOAL: Reims 0-2 Montpellier (Cabella). What a start in the second half for Montpellier! Cabella manages to steal the ball from the Reims defence, and then goes on to finish calmly past Agassa in goal to double his side’s lead.

20:02: KICK OFF: We are back underway in all 5 games!

19:46: HALF TIME: Bastia 0-0 Guingamp, Sochaux 1-0 Nantes, ASSE 1-0 VAFC, Reims 0-1 Montpellier, Evian 0-0 Ajaccio.

19:45: GOAL: St-Etienne 1-0 Valenciennes (Cohade). St-Etienne take a lead with the last kick of the half! A set piece is delivered from the left, and Cohade manages to steer into  Penneteau’s net to put the home side in front!

19:43: GOAL: Sochaux 1-0 Nantes (Sunzu). Sochaux take a shock lead against Nantes! And it is Sunzu who manages to put the ball into the net just before the break, giving Sochaux that crucial first goal. Nantes need to respond.

19:39: And just as I say the game was subdued, Ajaccio almost take the lead! Oliech is through and bearing down on goal, but his shot is brilliantly blocked in the last second by Angoula!

19:35: Just the one goal so far in our 5 Ligue 1 games, but Montpellier are well worth their lead. In the other games, Saint-Etienne and Nantes are slowly getting the upper hand, while Bastia vs Guingamp and Evian vs Ajaccio remains very subdued.

19:30: GOAL: Reims 0-1 Montpellier (Marveaux). Montpellier take the lead that they fully deserved, and it is Marveaux with the all important goal. Montpellier work the ball nicely down the left, and when the cross comes in Marveaux cannot miss from just a few yards out.

19:26: Khazri has taken a knock for Bastia against Guingamp. The camera’s show a nasty cut near the bottom of his leg, but after some attention from the medical team he looks OK to continue.

19:23: Close: Saint-Etienne come close for the first time! In their latest, when Hamouma was bursting in on a goalscoring position, Kagelmacher made a brilliant tackle to deny him a shot on goal. The game there is really opening up now.

19:18: Close: Almost brilliant from Montpellier! Niang runs down the wing, then pulls a ball back for Cabella on the edge of the box. He fakes a shot, flooring a Reims defender in the process, but his curled shot that follows is narrowly wide of the goal. Good start from Montpellier.

19:15: What a save! Bedoya sends in a header from 6 yards out for Nantes which is heading for the top corner, but Cros makes a brilliant save high to his left to palm the ball away for a corner. Nantes denied; Sochaux remain level.

19:12: Sochaux have a free-kick in a brilliant position to cross from down on the right hand side, but it is completely wasted as Roudet puts far too much on it and it clears everyone for a goal kick. The home side can’t really afford to be doing that, especially against this season’s surprise package Nantes.

19:09: And as I say that, the ASSE-VA game opens up a little bit. Firstly, Waris looks like he will be able to get a good shot away, only for the St-Etienne defence to scramble away. Then it is the home side’s turn to counter, but it comes to nothing after Corgnet is pushed off the ball.

19:05: Quiet starts all round so far, especially in St-Etienne vs Valenciennes, which had a bit of a delayed start. We’re expecting some big thing from today’s games, with top half sides like Nantes and St-Etienne in action as well as sides battling to avoid relegation.
