According to La Provence, Marseille have contacted Newcastle central defender Mapou Yanga MBiwa about a possible move.
The player has has failed negotiations with both Lille and Bordeaux, after he was judged to have asked for too great a salary.
Marseille are thought to have merely enquired about the player at the time of writing.
