Rennes sign Ola Toivonen

Yesterday it was officially confirmed by both clubs that Rennes had completed the signing of Ola Toivonen from Dutch giants PSV. The attacking midfielder’s fee was believed to be around 2.5 million euros, and it is a big statement of intent from the Ligue 1 club to sign such a player for a considerable fee.

So, who is Ola Toivonen and how can he help Rennes stay well clear of relegation? Well, Toivonen is a very experienced player at the highest level, having been at top Dutch club PSV for 5 and a half years. As a result, he could bring some much needed experience to a Rennes side just 6 points clear of relegation at the moment. Toivonen is an attacking midfielder, but his record at PSV reveals that not only is he capable of making assists, but he is a prolific goalscorer as well.

In his first 3 full seasons at PSV, he managed a staggering 46 goals from midfield, including 18 in the 2011/12 season. Although he has suffered injury setbacks in the past few years, and the goalscoring has somewhat dried up, he appears to be coming back to his best form, and he most likely decided to move to Rennes to have a change of location in an attempt to breathe new life into his career. Rennes have an exciting project, and if all goes well the could have a very exciting player in Ola Toivonen on their hands.
