In a report published by La Provence earlier this week, it suggests that there is a serious cannabis problem emerging at Marseille’s home games at the Stade Velodrome.
In France, it is up to Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 club owners to ban or allow smoking to take place. Bans are in place at the Parc des Princes and at the Stade Pierre Mauroy in Lille, but there is not a ban at the Stade Velodrome, where Marseille President Vincent Labrune himself has been known to light up on the touchline.
However, cigarette smoke is becoming the least of fans’ worries. According to the local media outlet, there is a growing cannabis problem at the Velodrome, with several fans unhappy with the situation. Time will only tell if Marseille ban smoking or not. Barcelona fans managed to rally for the ban of smoking and get in banned it at the Camp Nou. Will we see a similar situation emerge at Marseille?
It should be noted that the report carried with it no statistics to confirm a rise in cannabis smoking at the Velodrome, simply fan interviews who explained their worries and concerns.
