Didier Deschamps in special RTL appearance

France boss Didier Deschamps appeared on RTL this evening to speak about a number of players currently in the frame of the French national team.

On Karim Benzema: “He is always judged on the number of goals he scores, he also does a lot of other important things for the team.”

On Antoine Griezmann: “He took a bit of time to adapt at Madrid but today he is no longer the same player.”

On goal-line technology: “I am in favour of technology for the goal line but also to see if a foul was inside or outside the penalty area.”

On Zinedine Zidane: “Zidane will get his badges and then he will need to start somewhere. Where? I don’t know and in my opinion I don’t think he knows either.”

On Nabil Fekir: “Fekir arrived in the group quietly and very simply, there was so much media attention surrounding him. I did not accelerate my decision to pick him for the squad because of the dilemma that was facing hi at the times. He has different qualities and is mentally strong.”

On Paul Pogba: “He is supernormal. He is very strong going forward, he still has progress to make on a defensive basis, he is attentive.”

On Raphael Varane: “He has lots of maturity, elegance, anticipation, goes quickly, good technique.”

On Giroud/Benzema: “They can work together in certain matches. If I play with one attacker I could play Benzema wide, that is an option.”

On Morgan Schneiderlin: “In order for me to pronounce Schneiderlin correctly, I had to train myself, to break down the word…”
