Mamadou Sakho: “I don’t doubt myself, ever!”

Liverpool and France defender Mamadou Sakho spoke to L’Équipe about a number of things including the previous World Cup and his situation with the current team.

On the Brazil World Cup…

“Off the field, I think back to our final evening, in the hotel in Riberiao Preto, after being eliminated against Germany. It was magical. We all felt something strong. For the last time Mika Landreau was with France, we decided prepare him a little surprise by throwing him into the pool at 4 in the morning. It was also an illustration of the atmosphere that dominated the group. We gained a lot of confidence during this competition.”

On that playoff fixture against Ukraine to qualify for the World Cup…

“That was an historic moment for everybody but I am someone who is always looking forward, I quickly move on to the next thing. I have other objectives, the Euros notably. I stayed the same. It is true that we spoke between us the following 15 days after it. I was on the phone often with Blaise, with Paul. We were congratulating each other again because it was something really impressive. We continued to encourage each other.”

On who he believes the two starting central defenders should be for France…

“Everybody has their own opinion, I don’t doubt myself, ever! When I am here, I am at the disposition of the boss and respect his decisions. I always give my all, if I’m alongside Pierre, Paul or Jacques, or if I’m not playing at all.”
