Samir Nasri reveals contacts with Real Madrid and Manchester City

As the special guest of BeIN Sports’ Le Club last night, Manchester City Frenchman Samir Nasri revealed that he could have joined Real Madrid and Manchester United in seasons gone by.

On Manchester United…

“We met up in Paris with Sir Alex in a private apartment so as not to go to a hotel and create rumours. I was convinced by what he had the say to me. But there was one thing that caused a problem. He told me that he had never signed a player from Arsenal and that he would have to fight. I told him that it was of no interest of mine for me to fight with Arsène Wenger.”

On Manchester City…

“Manchester City were the first club to show their interest. I had a few doubts about how the club was evolving. Then I told myself that they really wanted me. They signed Agüero and there was already Silva, Balotelli, Tevez there… I had a discussion with one of my agents. They asked me if I wanted to make history or to be just another player at Manchester United. So I said: “Let’s go.” I won the title in my first season, so I made the right choice.”

On Real Madrid…

“Real Madrid? There were discussions for a time. Pape Diouf, who was Marseille’s President, said that only one player could leave. It was Franck Ribéry, who left for Bayern Munich, so I had to stay for another year at Marseille and then I went to Arsenal. We didn’t discuss it much. I was only 20 years old and I needed to stay for another year. I was a bit young. I left for Arsenal because of Arsène Wenger. At Real Madrid, it is prestigious, but if you don’t have strong shoulders, it is very difficult.”

On international retirement…

“Yes, it is over, even if there is a change in manager. My dream, ever since I was a kid, was to play at the World Cup. I have missed two of them for different reasons. But for me it remains a mystery. Didier Deschamps? I tried to talk to him, but he didn’t want to. We have the same agent, it could have led to something. That was his decision and I respect it.”
