Marseille attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet’s position regarding his future has not changed, despite concrete offers from West Ham United and Everton.
The player has made the decision to remain at Marseille for one more season, but he needs some guarantees. The first is that Marcelo Bielsa stays, something that is almost certainly confirmed. The second is the renegotiation of Payet’s contract, after his wage took a drop for the forthcoming season because OM failed to qualify for the Champions League.
A meeting has occurred today between Marseille President Vincent Labrune and Dimitri Payet’s agent to discuss a renegotiation.
Everton and West Ham in the meantime have been attempting to pile on the pressure, with both sides making offers, all of which have been rejected. The first offer worth €7m, by one of the two Premier League clubs was turned down. Then came an offer from West Ham worth €13m. Claims from the British media at the weekend that West Ham have upped their bid to €20m has been denied by both Marseille and Payet’s camp, according to La Provence.
Marcelo Bielsa really wants to keep Payet and if Marseille give in, it might even jeopardise the manager’s remaining at the club.
