Get French Football News can reveal that Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger made a promise to Colombian international David Ospina this summer, effectively guaranteeing him a starting spot for Champions League matches with some conditions attached to the agreement, in a bid to keep the former OGC Nice man at the club.
Ospina had been very serious this summer with his desire to leave Arsenal, with notable approaches from Turkey and Everton.
However, Wenger insisted that the pint-sized goalkeeper remain at the club as the number 2. Ospina eventually agreed to stay provided that he would be guaranteed a certain amount of playing time over the course of the 2016/17 campaign.
Wenger is understood to have promised Ospina that, outside of Premier League action, he would remain the first choice goalkeeper, i.e. for Champions League, League Cup and FA Cup action.
The agreement works that Ospina will remain in this position for the entire season unless Wenger believes the Colombian’s on-pitch performances to be inadequate.
After last night’s heroics vs PSG, Ospina is certainly well-placed.
