French language newspaper Le Soir persist this morning that Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has a €30m release clause in his current contract with the North London side, despite Spurs’ furious denials made yesterday when the news first came to light. This report comes as part of the Football Leaks series.
The Belgian outlet claim that Alderweireld earns €3.1m a year, with various clauses attached to his contract including:
€310,000 if the club qualifies for the Champions League and if he plays 30 or more matches.
€6,000 appearance bonus.
Tottenham Hotspur also pay Alderweireld €560,000 in image rights to a company set up by the Belgian international. The report does not stipulate whether this is a one off payment or a yearly one.
A 30 million release clause, but the report fails to explain which currency that 30 million is in, Euros or English pounds.
The validity of the latter claim can certainly therefore be questioned, owing the vague nature in which Le Soir present it and the fact that they do not offer any idea as to which currency they are talking about.
