According to UOL Deporte, Barcelona’s Neymar has decided that he would like to join PSG in 2017, therefore rejecting a contract extension from the Catalan club before leaving when he has just one year left on his current deal with FCB.
The report claims that both Neymar and his father have decided that the easiest way for the player to win the Ballon D’Or is to step out of the shadows of Suarez and Messi and join PSG.
Apparently, sources close to the player have informed the media outlet in question that PSG President Nasser Al Khelaifi dined with Neymar’s agent Wagner Ribeiro in Ibiza last week.
Contract negotiations although advanced, are not at a complete stage, according to the report.
Barcelona are only offering Neymar for a contract extension half as much as PSG are to join them, with Les Parisiens having approached the Brazilian with a offer worth €50m a year annually: €40m plus bonuses.
Another advantage for Neymar if he moves to PSG is that he minimises the risk that so many other high profile Barcelona players endure of being investigated over tax discrepancies by the Catalan justice system.
Neymar has also been convinced by the arguments made by the PSG Brazilian contingent, with Thiago Silva leading the charm offensive to convince the player to join Les Parisiens.
Neymar’s father wants his son to move to PSG now, it is the player who wants to wait a year, per this report.
If a deal was to be done now, PSG would have to pay €200m (the report is wrong as the player’s release clause is worth €193m), something that they are still willing to do.
From a Barcelona perspective, they cannot give up on the player signing a contract extension. But were Neymar to sign a new deal until 2021, it would be financially impossible for any other club to sign him and he would be stuck at Barcelona for a long time, something that he does not fancy.
In any case, the aforementioned report is certainly eye raising and will have the Catalan club sweating a little. Neymar to PSG in 2017? Time will tell…
