In a quite stunning turn of events, St Étienne are expected to announce this afternoon the termination of their agreement with Bologna for French winger Anthony Mounier, according to multiple French outlets.
The reason? Mounier is a former Lyon player and widespread anger from St Étienne fans, as well as internal disgust from manager Christophe Galtier, have contributed to the player’s uncertain future with Les Verts.
This issue was the reason why Mounier was not part of the ASSE squad yesterday against Toulouse. If he had played, ASSE could have contractually not ended the loan.
More problems for St Étienne, in that Bologna have no intention of taking him back and are not contractually obliged to do so, so annulation might not even be possible.
In this case, in what is turning out to be a complete and utter farce, St. Étienne appear set to be forced to activate Mounier’s buy clause and then attempt to either sell or loan him on themselves.
Atalanta are interested in the player, but on loan, according to Gianluca di Marzio.
