Marseille ready to use Lassana Diarra to broker Dimitri Payet deal

The last few days have been very interesting with regards to the future of West Ham United attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet.

Nobody would have thought 6 months ago that anybody from Ligue 1 save PSG would be able to take one of the Premier League’s leading lights away from them.

Now, after intense discussions between Marseille boss Rudi Garcia and Dimitri Payet’s entourage, the French international is considering a return to OM, in an incredible turn of events.

Marseille have promised the player that they will make a salary effort that would probably represent the highest paid player in the club’s history, close to matching his current wage packet at West Ham United.

The only problem is the Hammers at the moment. With Payet’s current deal running until 2021, the Premier League side are in a fantastic negotiating position. Marseille President Eyraud is willing to pay up to €40m for the player, but cannot go higher than that.

Hence why in recent hours, OM have been considering offering a player in part exchange. According to L’Équipe, the only viable player in this regard is Lassana Diarra. The French international defensive midfielder has been seeking an exit door for the last 6 months, and this window was hoping for a move to China, with a €10m fine hanging over his head imposed by FIFA regarding a prior wage dispute with Lokomotiv Moscow.

The problem is there is no interest in Diarra at the time of writing. Using ingenuity, OM are set to offer West Ham the possibility of taking the former Arsenal and Chelsea man in exchange. What a deal this would turn out to be.
