Paris Saint-Germain officially unveiled Brazilian superstar Neymar to the world yesterday, with both he and president Nasser Al-Khelaifi speaking today at the Parc des Princes. Here are the highlights.
President Nasser Al Khelaifi on Neymar’s arrival:
I am very happy to be here to present this great player, this great star, Neymar. Neymar is an idol for the whole world, for football lovers and sports lovers in general. For me personally, Neymar is the best player in the world, so it is a dream of PSG fans to have him.
Neymar on his new challenge in Paris:
This is a wonderful city. I really can’t describe what I am feeling now. I wanted something bigger. I want a bigger challenge and my heart brought me here. I came to Paris because I want a new challenge, not because I did not feel like a star at Barcelona. I felt good at Barcelona, but my heart told me it was time to sign for PSG.
On feeling ‘at home’ at PSG:
I kind of feel like I am at home already. I have friends here who were happy that I came. To be really honest, the fact that I have friends here would not have changed my approach to PSG, if they were not here. I wanted to figure out what I wanted to do with my life… It is very complicated to communicate when you’re not sure.
Neymar on why PSG:
I was never motivated by money, it has never been my first motivation. I am really sad that people think I am motivated by money.
Nasser Al Khelaifi on why Neymar joined PSG:
I can guarantee that Neymar did not come for the money. He could get much more money elsewhere than here. The world is going to talk about this transfer for a long time. Hopefully positively, he didn’t come here for the money. He came here to write the history of the club and try a new challenge.
Nasser Al Khelaifi on FFP:
We have been very transparent from day one on Financial Fair Play. We are working under the regulations. For people worrying about Financial Fair Play, go have a coffee, there are no problems. What we have done is completely transparent and legal… for what the media says, we honestly don’t care.
Neymar on the “Se Queda” Tweet:
It was a bit of a relaxed moment, we were having lunch together… I told him (Gerard Pique) not to post it. I made my decision 2 days ago. The Barcelona coach (Ernesto Valverde) was the first to know what my decision actually was.
