Monaco have completed the signing of Rennes winger Adama Diakhaby for a fee of €8m plus €2m in bonuses.
The 21-year-old joins on a deal until 2022 and will be introduced to the team before Friday’s opening Ligue 1 fixture against Toulouse. His versatility will be a big asset to Monaco this season, but coach Leonardo Jardim is wary of throwing the youngster in at the deep end early on.
Diakhaby scored four goals in 25 Ligue 1 appearances for Rennes last season, scoring half of those goals in the final game of the season against Monaco of all teams.
He’s also able to play across the front line in either wing position or down the middle, and has been touted as the replacement for Thomas Lemar. However, Jardim’s reluctance to play Diakhaby early on would suggest he is merely Lemar’s understudy.
