Lille have confirmed that midfielder Rio Mavuba has left the club to join Czech side Sparta Prague after spending nine years at the club.
“The emblematic captain” as the club calls him on their official website, will join Sparta Prague on a three-year-deal and may see out the rest of his career in the Czech Republic following a successful tenure with LOSC.
Mavuba arrived at the club in 2008 initially on loan from La Liga side Villarreal, but made his move permanent at the end of the season for a fee of around €6m. The 33-year-old made 369 appearances in all competitions for LOSC, 299 of which coming in Ligue 1 and was captain of the club when they won both the Coupe de France and Ligue 1 domestic double.
Undoubtedly, Mavuba will be remembered as a Lille legend, with the club saying “Rio is a symbol of the modern history of the club!” It will be a different kind of challenge for Mavuba, but everyone at Lille wishes him well for his future.
