VERDICT: Tottenham Hotspur would do very well to sign Thomas Lemar

Social media is at it again. After Monaco star Djibril Sidibe ‘liked’ an Instagram post of team-mate Thomas Lemar wearing a Tottenham Hostpur shirt, social networks exploded with Spurs fans reacting to the prospect.

Their club has challenged for the title for the last two years, and the signing of Lemar could help propel them to glory. They’re at 9/1 to lift next year’s trophy, but if you’re into betting then make sure you do it well with the matchedbets.com method.

Yet, there’s a strong sense of deja vú here – after all, it was only in January when Galatasaray winger Bruma liked a similar photo of himself superimposed in a Spurs shirt on the same site. Nothing materialised there, yet the Lilywhites are right to get excited.

The young France international had a superb season for title-winning Monaco, forming part of a formidable attacking unit alongside Bernardo Silva, Kylian Mbappé and Radamel Falcao. The 21-year-old scored nine goals and provided 10 assists in Ligue 1, but also made an impact in the Champions League – as Spurs fans will remember. The two teams faced each other in the group stage, and the classy winger scored the winner on both occasions when they met, effectively knocking them out of the tournament.

Whilst he currently belongs to France’s top side, the lure of playing in the Premier League can’t be ignored. What’s more, it seems that Mauricio Pochettino’s side would be a perfect fit. Not only is the Argentinian coach building a youthful side which matures together – a box which Lemar ticks – but he also demands 100% commitment from his players. Monaco’s pressing style isn’t dissimilar to Spurs’ in that way, and Lemar has proven to have incredible work rate.

The London club do boast impressive attacking options from wide areas, including Heung-min Song and Christian Eriksen. Nevertheless, it also appears that Erik Lamela and Moussa Sissoko are heading out of the club – the latter possibly moving to Marseille. Georges-Kevin Nkoudou – who signed last summer from Les Phocéens – is also linked with a move back to France, with Nantes interested in his signature.

Those departures would pave the way for Lemar to move to London, adding star quality to a side that is preparing to balance Champions League and Premier League football for the second year running. His unpredictable, direct style mirrors that of Son – a player who’s shone in English football this year – and Spurs fan can only hope that a lot more can be read into that cheeky Instagram like.
