Can Griezmann set the World Cup on Fire and End the Tournament as Top Goal Scorer?

Antoine Griezmann went into the 2014 World Cup in Brazil as a newcomer to Didier Deschamps’ squad and earned a starting place thanks to the injury to French legend Franck Ribery. Since then, he has enjoyed a meteoric rise to the top of the pecking order in the national side and is likely to be one of the key players for Les Bleus in this summer’s competition in Russia. With France looking like one of the teams who could go all the way, the Atletico Madrid forward has a strong chance of banging in more goals than any of his rivals in the summer tournament.

Griezmann has once again been in fine goal scoring form for his club this season, and his goals have helped fire Atletico into second with a chance of finishing above rivals Real Madrid. When the season ends, the French attacker will have his target set on getting the better of his cross-town rival Cristiano Ronaldo for a second time in the World Cup. Going into the tournament, the Portuguese legend and the Frenchman are virtually neck-and-neck in the bookies’ estimations for the top goal scorer in the tournament. They can both be backed at around 14/1. As it stands, it’s Lionel Messi and Neymar who the bookies favour to end with the most goals.

The fact that France have a strong chance of getting all the way to the final should give Griezmann the chance to play the maximum number of games and earn his accolade. Deschamps has an extremely capable squad at his disposal, and belief in France is high after almost winning Euro 2016. The same can’t be said for old rivals England who, according to Oddschecker, are being backed by their own countrymen to leave the tournament before the knockout stages.

Griezmann has already proven that he has what it takes to impress on the world stage after his exploits in the France tournament of 2016. In the Euros, the tricky attacker scored six goals and set up another two to end the tournament with the Golden Boot. He was also named the best player of the competition.

One thing that could work against Griezmann is the fact that his fellow countryman Kylian Mbappe may be set to share the goal scoring spoils in Russia this time. The on-loan Paris Saint-Germain attacker has found strong goalscoring form at Parc des Princes and, despite playing alongside goal hungry attackers Neymar and Edinson Cavani, has still managed to bang in his fair tally of goals. The 19-year-old wonder kid looks set to make his name on the international stage this summer, after earning his first call-up to the France squad in March of 2017 and impressing from then on.

There is no doubt of Griezmann’s quality and supreme eye for goal and, if France can make it to the latter stages of the tournament, the Atletico man has a strong chance of topping the scoring charts. Of course, as a team player, he won’t mind sharing the glory with his teammates along the way.
