Ligue 1 Referee of the Year Award cancelled after referees rally behind banned official

The UNFP Ligue 1 Referee of the Year Award was not presented as normal this evening during the annual award show.

The reason being, is that the award, voted for by Ligue 1 referees, was due to go to currently banned referee Tony Chapron, who is serving a suspension after intentionally tripping up Nantes defender Diego Carlos in a fit of rage during a Ligue 1 game this season.

In a show of solidarity to Chapron against what they perceive to be his harsh ban (6 months), Ligue 1’s referees had voted him as the winner of this year’s award, causing the organisers to cancel the trophy to avoid embarrassment.
