AS Monaco have this afternoon confirmed the signing of midfielder Aleksandr Golovin from CSKA Moscow.
The Russian international, who played a starring role in the hosts’ run to the World Cup quarter-finals, has signed a 5-year contract at the Stade Louis II.
The 2017 Ligue 1 Champions have beaten off long-standing interest from Chelsea and Barcelona in the 22-year-old.
Monaco Vice-President Vadim Vasilyez admitted to the Russian publication Sport Express that negotiations in the deal were lengthy but that Golovin had made the correct in choosing Monaco over Chelsea: “Honestly, until the last moment I was not sure that I would be able to coordinate this transfer. Our main competitor was Chelsea. I believe Monaco offered more favourable conditions for the club and a more understandable project for Golovin”.
Golovin is likely to serve as a direct replacement for the recently departed Joao Moutinho, who has moved to Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers.
