Schalke have completed the signing of left-back Hamza Mendyl from Lille.
The Moroccan defender – who has impressed at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy since his gradual first team breakthrough in the 2016/17 season, making 13 appearances in total for Les Dogues – has moved to the Bundesliga side for a fee believed to be €7m.
The 20-year-old had been in talks last week with Arsenal over a potential late move to the Emirates Stadium before the end of the English transfer window, until a deal stalled as the paperwork delayed negotiations.
Mendyl has received 13 international caps for Morocco and was an unused substitute in their three World Cup group games at Russia 2018.
The full-back has signed a 5-year contract at Schalke and has expressed in sealing the move to the Gelsenkirchen-based side. “I’m delighted to have signed for such a big club. With Domenico Tedesco, I’ve got a coach who is renowned for improving players. I want to keep developing and play important role in all three campaigns for Schalke 04 this season”.
