Young Chelsea midfielder Victorien Angban is set for his fourth successive loan spell away from the club after season-long stints in Spain and Belgium. Metz is the industrious centre midfielder’s newest destination, as Angban has just today been officially loaned to the Ligue 2 side. Included in the loan deal between FC Metz and Chelsea is an option to buy, an opportunity Les Grenats will likely exercise if the Ivorian impresses in France.
Dubbed the “next John Obi Mikel” or the “next Yaya Touré” by some rather optimistic Chelsea fans, Angban has yet to really impress during his time with The Blues. Hailing from Abidjan, the young Ivorian left his hometown club Stade d’Abidjan for Chelsea at the tender age of 15. After impressing with the club’s youth sides, Angban signed with the Premier League outfit in 2015 and was promptly sent out on loan to Belgium. Since then the central midfielder saw time in Spain with Granada and Belgium again with Waasland-Beveren.
An Ivorian international having been capped 6 times by his nation, Angban is very much a promising player despite never getting a sniff at Chelsea’s first team. The central midfielder has a remarkable work-rate on the pitch and is not afraid to do the dirty work for his team. In his 31 league appearances for Waasland-Beveren last season Angban scored one goal and provided two assists in a more defensive role in the club’s midfield.
While Metz may not be able to attract more established, promising players due to their recent relegation, the signing of Angban seems a smart one.
