Tours FC have today completed the signing of goalkeeper Steeve Elana. Elana, a well-versed player at 38 years old, joins from Ligue 2 side GFC Ajaccio where he made 56 league appearances over two years.
An experienced man between the sticks with over 400 professional matches to his name, Elana will bring a certain know-how to a Tours team looking to rebound after a disappointing 2016/17 campaign. The recently relegated side will be playing in the third tier of French football after a 20th place Ligue 2 finish last season.
Having conceded 68 goals in Ligue 2 play in 2016/17, a keeper of Elana’s quality will be a welcome addition to Tours’ leaky defence. Perhaps the Martinique goalkeeper’s best season came in 2013 with Stade Brestois, when he was named the best goalkeeper of Ligue 2 at the conclusion of the season.
The Ligue 2 accolade was only the beginning for Elana, as he later became just the fifth keeper in Ligue 1 history to record eight consecutive clean sheets.
Franco Torchia, the sporting director of Tours FC, detailed the reasonings for the transfer of Elana in the club’s official signing announcement. “The club was looking for an experienced goalkeeper capable of joining our project and guiding our young keepers…Steeve will bring his high-level experience to Tours,” Torchia declared.
