Schalke 04, Shanghai Shenhua & Guangzhou Evergrande all tried to trigger Dries Mertens’ release clause

RMC report that Belgian attacker and Napoli man Dries Mertens’ €28m release clause, that expired earlier this week, was attempted to be triggered by Schalke 04, Shanghai Shenhua & Guangzhou Evergrande.

But the player was not interested in accepting any of the offers, with his family having settled very well in Naples.

Mertens will discuss the possibility of a new Napoli contract after the World Cup, with de Laurentiis’ current asking price for the player now €55m.

A new deal could see Mertens’ contract extended to 2023.
