Bordeaux manager Paulo Sousa’s entourage have confirmed to L’Équipe today that they have received interest from Arsenal, with the Premier League side looking to find a long-term replacement for departed coach Unai Emery.
The Portuguese tactician can leave Les Girondins at any moment should he want to, with a €2m to €3m buy-out clause included in his contract with the Ligue 1 side.
When he signed his deal with Bordeaux in March of this year until 2022, this specific clause was included by his agent in case an interesting opportunity arose.
AC Milan have also recently sounded out Sousa, with L’Équipe now confirming TMW reporting that Arsenal have placed Sousa on their shortlist to replace the departed Basque tactician.
Sousa is not the only candidate for the Arsenal job, with the French newspaper confirming that the Gunners’ board have also met with ex-Valencia boss Marcelino. However, Sousa’s entourage have confirmed interest from Arsenal directly to L’Équipe:
“They like his profile, not just as a coach but also as a person. This does not mean that he will leave. They are in talks with multiple candidates but Paulo is part of that list, certainly. Between the two, it could work.”
His entourage added: “But with all the problems currently ongoing at Bordeaux, why wouldn’t he leave? The project is not what was promised to him, that is a fact. He loves the fans but he needs more from the board, the team is not strong enough to finish in the top 6.”
Bordeaux’s Director of Football Eduardo Macia has also been contacted about these revelations: “It would be normal that teams are interested in him but we have not been contacted.”
