It seems that Manchester City is not yet ready for the later stage fight in the Champions League commented manager Pep Guardiola. This came after Man City had a thrilling comeback late in the match to F.C Schalke.
The late comeback came on the heels of Raheem Sterling, a forward on the team who scored during the final minute of normal time. Sterling managed to pick up on the long kick from Schalke goalkeeper Ederson Moraes and send it home.
Man City, who are Premier League champions, entered the match as favourites with leading sportsbooks such as Pinnacle Sports. The champs went into the lead eighteen minutes into the first half. However, Schalke swung that in their favour just before the half-time due to Nabil Bentaleb getting two penalties and an arguable VAR decision.
That saw Schalke earning two penalty kicks after Man City’s Nicolas Otamendi was penalised for a handball violation. The second kick came as a result of a foul by Fernandinho against Salif Sane that saw a VAR decision being followed by the referee. Otamendi also got handed a second yellow card for fouling Guido Burgstaller, and that resulted in him sitting out for the remainder of the second half.
The performance certainly didn’t sit well with sportsbooks such as Pinnacle Sports, a mobile friendly online sportsbook that offers Champions League matches. Those who enjoy sports betting and are interested in learning how to download pinnacle mobile app will find its odds are favourable, as are its promotions. However, Man City is still generating excellent odds after Pep Guardiola, who saw defeat on the horizon, elected to send in Leroy Sane, a former F.C Schalke attacker.
Prior to Sterling striking, Sane managed to send home a free kick and for Pep Guardiola that was a great result. Guardiola commenting on the overall match said “We gave them two penalties, we gave them a red card, and in this competition that is not too good. We are still not ready to fight for the latter stages, that is reality, but the result is good. We played with incredible personality. We gave two goals when they did absolutely nothing. It is not over, this competition is completely different.”
The next leg will take place on the 12th of March. Whether Man City is able to show their resolve will be seen, but questions were raised after their 2-1 loss to Newcastle in January. However, after winning their next five matches, those questions have turned to if the club can win this season a quadruple of trophies, which would be unprecedented.
Midfielder Phil Foden feels that is possible and that they can win all four. That sediment is not shared by Kevin de Bruyne, another midfielder who made the suggestion that doing so will be near impossible. Pep Guardiola, when asked if it was possible called the question silly, even though the team at the time sat on top of the Premier League.
Man City managed to control the ball 70% of the game, and even though their win came late, they scored twice and are now favoured to advance to the final eight. The loss for Schalke was a bit nerve-racking for Sane, who commented that the atmosphere was amazing as always.
“Schalke did really well, the way they defended made it difficult, said Sane. At the end we did it, we scored three goals away – that was the most important thing. You can see the will is a lot. We never give up, we always want to keep fighting. I don’t know what is handball and what isn’t.’
