L’Équipe report that Catalan giants Barcelona have made fresh contact in recent days for French international and Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann.
The 27-year-old, who was already very interested in joining FCB last summer, remains attentive to what they have to offers this time around.
The player’s release clause at Atleti is not the €200m as widely reported, but €120m under the condition that it is activated by June 2019.
This stipulation was negotiated by Griezmann’s entourage when he agreed to sign a new deal until 2023 so as to prevent the door from being completely shut on a departure, depending on certain conditions.
One of those was how far Atleti made it in the Champions’ League this season – if the Madrid club had an early exit, then this clause would be activated. Diego Simeone’s aim was for his side to make this year’s final.
Following Ronaldo’s masterclass which knocked Atleti out this week, Griezmann is questioning his future again – the Frenchman has instructed his Spanish lawyers to look at the possibility of a move to Barça again.
From the Barcelona perspective, the club’s board know that Griezmann would be welcomed with open arms into the dressing room: last summer, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez actively wanted the player to sign, as did Gerard Piqué.
Under his current contract, Griezmann is earning €21m a year net and in recent discussions, Barcelona are offering the Frenchman considerably less: €16m net per annum on a contract until 2024. To compensate for the wage drop that the French would have to take if he were to make this move, FCB are offering a considerable signing bonus. Such a deal would make Griezmann the 2nd highest paid player at Barcelona, behind Lionel Messi.
Griezmann’s father, who is now his main advisor, is actively encouraging his son to join Barcelona – Griezmann Sr & Jr are both incredibly frustrated by the Champions’ League exit.
