L’Équipe report that a quintet of clubs from Britain have had bids for French youth international attacker Jean-Philippe Mateta rebuffed by Mainz, all worth between €20m and €25m.
The teams are: Watford, Newcastle United, Southampton, Everton and the recently relegated Cardiff City.
Mainz do not want to lose Mateta cheaply, and have publicly made it clear that he is going to stay via their Sporting Director.
In private, they admit that a bid worth between €35m and €40m for the 21-year-old would be enough to make them seriously consider the player’s departure.
In France, both Marseille and Monaco have made enquiries for a player under contract until 2022, with Mainz currently mulling over offering Mateta a new deal with a significant pay rise. The Bundesliga club are hoping to reach an agreement with the player over a new contract before he participates in the U21 EURO tournament and interest in his services becomes even stronger.
