Speaking to Record, 24-year-old attacker and Portuguese international Gelson Martins poured doubt on his future at AS Monaco, despite the Principality side telling supporters that the Ligue 1 club had purchased the player from Atletico Madrid.
“The truth is that Monaco already wanted me to sign before I joined Atletico Madrid. Their interest is well-documented, and as Leonardo Jardim made his return to the touchline, I decided to join Monaco. Over there, it was different. The team was on a bad run, the pressure was great, but I came for playing time and to enjoy myself. It was the best decision that I could have taken.”
“We will see what happens next. Monaco want me to stay but we will have to see. At Monaco, I played to not go down a division and I finished by receiving more attention. I did of course score some goals, but I can see that it was not enough to be called up for the Nations League.”
“I do not want to return to Atletico Madrid. I am still the same player and I know that my characteristics do not correspond with what the team wanted. And it is not now that things are going to change. Simeone is not going to change his philosophy for me.”
