Ligue 1 Round 6 – Predictions & Previews

We are five rounds into the new football campaign, but there is nothing new when it comes to the very top of the table. Despite one surprising loss, the reigning champions PSG are still sitting in the first posiition with 12 points. They are playing big derby match against Olympique Lyon this Sunday, and we should witness one hell of a match. Let’s take a look at some stats, previews and info for the most interesting encounters played this weekend!

Olympique Marseille v Montpellier

Fans were not happy with the way Andre Villas Boas’ squad opened the new season. After the initial loss to Reims, and a draw against  Nantes, AVB was already one of the favourite for the cash with leading betting tips sites. Since then, Marseille have collected three wins in a row. They were not in a good spot against AS Monaco last weekend, being down by two goals just 25 minutes in. However, the comeback was orchestred by Dario Benedetto and Valere Germain, eventually winning the match 4-3. There is a lot of room for improvements when it comes to defence, that’s for sure. Can they keep a clean sheet this weekent against Montpellier?

The most recent head to head duel between these two teams was played at Velodrome as well, in May this year. Hosts celebrated a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to the goal of Florian Thauvin. The last time Montpellier took all three points against Marseille as visitors was in 2014. Montpellier are currently occupying the 12th position with seven points, having very modest 4-4 goal difference. Hosts are favourites for the win, priced at 1.85 odds by all major bookmakers. We are tipping Marseille to win and to keep a clean sheet!

Rennes v Lille

The biggest surprise of the new season so far is Rennes. This team has collected ten points, currently sitting in very high 2nd place and having great chemistry. Can they recover from two poor performances in the last two Ligue 1 games? Rennes have lost at home to Nice 2-1, followed with a goalless draw on the road against Brest. They are going to be involved in mid-week Europa League action as well, facing Celtic at this same stadium.

Lille are nowhere close to the form or squad that managed to win the 2nd place in Ligue 1 last season. The departure of Nicolas Pépé to Arsenal FC was a huge deal for the team. The results so far are not that bad though – three victories and two defeats. Playing in the UEFA Champions League group stages is going to be massive for a lot of young players playing for LOSC. When it comes to domestic plans and burning issues, they need to fix the approach to games on the road. Both were lost so far to Reims and Amiens SC. Draw seems like the most reasonable full-time outcome of this game against Rennes.

Olympique Lyonnais v Paris SG

Many experts were hoping to see Olympique Lyonnais finally challenge Paris SG in the title race this season. That is hardly going to be the case unless Sylvinho’s squad starts playing much better. A lot of weight has been carried out by Moussa Dembele and Memphis Depay so far. This duo scored nine goals combined in Ligue 1, and they will most certainly represent a huge threat for Saints’ defence.

PSG have lost one game already this season to Rennes 2-1 on the road. The remaining games were looking absolutely perfect though – four wins and four clean sheets, with a dominant 10-0 goal difference. Despite all the drama surrounding Neymar Jr, we believe PSG won’t have big troubles to take all three points in the derby match this weekend.
