Nicolas Benezet explains move to Toronto FC

Speaking to L’Équipe, 28-year-old French winger Nicolas Benezet explained his decision to leave Ligue 2 side EA Guingamp for MLS outfit Toronto FC.

“To be frank, I did not have an enormous amount of opportunities aside from it in recent days. The idea from the beginning was not too move far away, but when my agent spoke to me about the MLS, not long ago at all, I told myself that it was a good opportunity. I am going to discover another culture, another way of living football. And also, I speak a fair amount of English already so I hope to integrate quickly.”

The season is already well underway. When will you be ready?

I hope this weekend. I have been part of two pre-seasons this summer, first with the Guingamp 1st team and then the reserves. I played in friendly matches, I feel good. I don’t yet have a full 90 minutes under my belt, maybe an hour, but I can’t wait to start as we play in New York on Sunday, against the Red Bulls. There is also a play-off place to go after so it is motivating to be able to experience that.
