Speaking to La Chaine L’Équipe, after tonight’s 2-1 EURO 2020 qualifying victory over Moldova, Olivier Giroud discussed his taking of the winning penalty.
“I had the heart to take it. I tried a lot of things, we lack a bit of pragmatism, at times, and the rub of the green. I had huge hunger to get this victory. We took some time to get into the swing of things. We were aware that we had to show intensity in order to destabilise this team. We made a lot of technical mistakes, we lacked bite and aggressiveness in the duels. We were a bit soft at certain moments. At half-time, the coach told us what he had to tell us. We have to know how to speak to each other honestly, that’s necessary. We won back our heads into the right space for the 2nd half. The score could have been heavier. (For EURO 2020) We must be one of the three or four favourites. We cannot hide from it: we have the ambition to win these Euros. We will have to put in different 1st half performances to tonight. What is good, is to know to fix things.”
