In the 86th minute of tonight’s France vs Turkey, a pro-Kurdish banner was unveiled, bringing about scuffles and boos from the Turkish travelling contingent.
The banner read: “Stop massacring the Kurds,” facing directly towards where the majority of Turkish fans were sitting. The people who unveiled this banner were wearing French national team shirts. These individuals were rapidly shut down by stewards and copiously booed by Turkish fans, according to the AFP. A fight then broke out where the banner was unveiled, and then also in another stand a few minutes later.
The security services inside the Stade de France were able to nullify the disturbance by the time the final whistle blew. Up until then, no incidents occurred outside or inside the stadium on a night of high political tension between the two nations, who on the pitch played out a 1-1 draw.
