Speaking to France Football after the 2019 Ballon D’Or ceremony, 2nd placed finisher in this year’s classification, Liverpool central defender Virgil Van Dijk reacted to missing out on the award to Lionel Messi.
“This has been an exceptional year, incredible. There are other players, like Lionel Messi, who are better than one can even imagine, supernatural. Six times the Ballon D’Or… I was not far away, it’s true! However, there is someone who plays better than me. I am happy in any case with what I have done with Liverpool and the Netherlands. I hope that we can do the same again.”
“Honestly, I never thought that I would even qualify for the Ballon D’Or, until the moment that I was nominated. It shows the evolution of my career. My career does not resemble that of tonight’s winner, I came through a bit late it’s true, but in any case I have always held on to my dreams and I have got to here today because of it.”
