L’Équipe report today that St Étienne will as ever listen to any offers made for their players in the January window with an element of interest.
This is because the club is looking to raise funds to be able to purchase a striker. Claude Puel is not convinced by the qualities of 28-year-old striker Robert Beric, which has personally hurt the player, who has been with Les Verts since 2015. As a result, Beric could be moved on next month, but there is no obvious buyer.
However, there are three players for slightly different reasons that are almost certain to remain with Les Verts past next month.
ASSE will refuse any bids for 18-year-old central defender Wesley Fofana & 20-year-old midfielder Zaydou Youssouf. These two are viewed as critical elements of the club’s future presently.
The third individual is Yann M’Vila, who currently has one of the largest salaries in the squad at €210k per month before tax. Last summer, the 29-year-old was the subject of interest from Premier League side Crystal Palace, but also secretly met with Fenerbahce Sporting Director Damien Comolli in Lyon about a possible move.
When asked directly about his transfer window prospects, M’Vila shot back: “I am not the sort of person to leave the boat in the middle of the ocean. I have my pride. I will maybe disappoint some people by saying this, but I will stay until at least the end of the season. After that, we will see what the board wants.”
