LFP to lose €278m in TV rights money following 2019/20 season cancellation

Le Parisien report that the LFP will lose out on €278m worth of TV rights money from BeIN Sports and Canal Plus, following their decision to terminate the 2019/20 season with 10 weekends of action still to be played.

Canal Plus sent the LFP a letter yesterday confirming the termination of their agreement to broadcast Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 in 2019/20 and BeIN Sports are expected to do the same in the coming hours.

After agreeing to transfer €37m as part of the due payment in April for matches that had already been played, Canal + already indicated at the end of last month that it would not be making any more payments if the season did not restart.

In the letter seen by L’Équipe, Canal Plus state that they are “excited” for next season to start and that they hope that occurs as quickly as possible. The letter also indicated that the TV station was not interested in broadcasting matches in a play-off style to finish the 2019/20 campaign in more rapid fashion as proposed by Lyon President Aulas.

The French newspaper’s figures differ in terms of how much they feel was still due to be paid by Canal + and BeIN Sports by the end of the season, €243m.
