L’Équipe report that Serie A side Napoli have entered into formal negotiations with German outfit Mainz to sign 22-year-old French attacker Jean-Philippe Mateta.
The Neapolitan side have made it clear to both player and club that he is their primary target this window, despite attempts from the Germans to underline that they have very little intention of selling the Frenchman until the end of the current campaign.
Mateta has missed the majority of the action this season with a meniscus injury, but Mainz are convinced that despite only playing 5 times this campaign, he will be key to the second half of 2019/20.
Napoli have yet to submit a written proposal to Mainz, but they are in ongoing negotiations to with them – the Italians have undertaken a considerable seduction operation with the player, having told him that they would like to start him against Barcelona in the Champions’ League.
Mateta has informed Mainz that he wants to leave, as he feels that a move to Napoli could give him an outside chance of a place at EURO 2020 or the Olympic Games.
Napoli are laser focused on getting their man in the final hours of this window.
