Yaya Soumaré signs professional deal with Lyon

Lyon have announced the signing of a first professional contract for 19-year-old attacker Yaya Soumaré.

The deal runs for three years until 2023 – Soumaré is considered as one of the best prospects of his generation, and joined the academy for the 2015/16 campaign from AS Minguettes. Soumaré this season has played an important role for the reserves in the French 4th division and put in some impressive UEFA Youth League performances as well.

Bayern Munich had notably been in negotiations to convince him to join instead.

The player had the following to say upon the announcement:

“It is with great pride that I sign my first professional contract for the club that formed me, the club of where I am from. It is the culmination of several years of work but the hardest is yet to come. My aims are to improve in training with the 1st team and play a few matches. In the medium term, it will be to make my mark in the 1st team and why not play at the Groupama Stadium… This period is difficult for everyone. I would have liked to sign at the stadium with the president but health comes before everything else. I hope that we will be back on the pitch, with team-mates and staff.”
