Benjamin Mendy suspended by Manchester City following rape and sexual assault charges

Manchester City full-back Benjamin Mendy has been suspended by his club this afternoon, after it emerged that the French international had been charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault by three complainants, as announced by the Cheshire Police.

The police statement adds that the incidents are “alleged to have taken place between October 2020 and August 2021”, and that “criminal proceedings against Mendy are live”.

Manchester City’s statement indicates that the defender is suspended “pending an investigation”, and that the club is unable to comment any further until the legal process is complete.
