Speaking to reporters following Wednesday night’s 2-2 draw with Portugal, France defender Jules Koundé discussed his competitive debut for Les Bleus, having sat in the unfamiliar right-back role.
“We are very proud, also very happy, I was very excited about the idea of playing this match, even if this is not my position. I really enjoyed myself and my aim for the French national team has been achieved. We could have done certain things a lot better. These are demanding matches, every 4 days. Without looking for excuses, it was very hot, we were subjected to a major challenge.”
On conceding a penalty:
It was unlucky. There is a penalty, my hand is out. I defend the first cross well, I tried to block the second, I am off balance but my hand is raised and the ball hits my hand. It is a shame, it gives them the equaliser, thankfully it did not cost us 1st place.
On playing at right-back:
Yes it was hard, a bit on the attacking aspects and what I am able to bring. Physically, these are different runs and movements but I tried to do my best. It is by playing there a little more often that I will get used to it. I am still new to this team, I am trying my best to adapt.
