L’Équipe report this afternoon that Karim Benzema is set to extend his contract with Real Madrid by an additional season until 2023, with an official announcement expected tomorrow afternoon.
The French international and now-club captain has scored 281 goals in his 12-year spell in the Spanish capital, now becoming the sole key figure at the club after Sergio Ramos’ departure.
Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez is looking to have the forward finish his career at the club, having already placed a €1bn release clause in his previous contract. Benzema had given his verbal agreement for a new contract in March, but the signature had been delayed by his unexpected return to the French national team for the Euros.
