Kurt Zouma to replace Raphaël Varane in upcoming France squad

L’Équipe report that with Raphaël Varane out for several weeks with a hamstring injury, West Ham’s Kurt Zouma will replace the defender in the upcoming France squad.

France will play Kazakhstan and Finland next week, with three points securing qualification for the 2022 World Cup, and announces his squad today.

Should Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano miss out – having struggled during the last break – both Ibrahima Konaté of Liverpool and Marseille’s William Saliba have been looked at.

In goal, Mike Maignan will miss out through a wrist injury, which could see a return to the France set-up for West Ham’s Alphonse Areola, with Illan Meslier of Leeds an important part of the U21 team.

N’Golo Kanté is a doubt as a result of a muscle issue, which prevented him from playing in Chelsea’s midweek Champions League fixture. Deschamps is expected to go with the same midfield otherwise, including the likes of Paul Pogba, Mattéo Guendouzi, and Aurélien Tchouaméni.

Anthony Martial is a doubt for the squad, while Kingsley Coman is expected to make his return after a heart issue prevented him from playing in October. Christopher Nkunku, who impressed last night against his former club PSG, would not be a surprise inclusion and could be called up.
