Ligue 1 Team Of The Week | Matchday 13, 2021/22

GK, Anthony Lopes (Lyon) – Lyon’s loss at Rennes could have been a cricket score were it not for a raft of stunning stops from the OL keeper. A close range save from Terrier early on and a snap stop from Laborde with his foot where first half highlights before a flying change of direction to halt a Bourigeaud header after half time topped the lot.

RB, Jonathan Clauss (Lens) – It’s becoming almost comical that he hasn’t been given a France call up as unquestionably France’s best right-back or wing-back. A goal and another two assists helped Lens beat Troyes 4-0 this weekend.

CB, Maxime Estève (Montpellier) – Still just 19, he continues to grow in stature and play with a maturity beyond his years. His challenge on Delort as Nice countered just after half time was key to Montpellier’s smash and grab win at Nice.

CB, Tiago Djaló (Lille) – His form for Lille in the injured Sven Botman’s stead continues to impress and defended well throughout the draw with Angers, notably making a key first half sliding interception to stop Boufal scoring. He also did well to scoop in the opener.

LB, Thomas Delaine (Metz) – A real dynamo in Metz’s creditable draw at Marseille and his powerful running resulted in two efforts off the post before half time while he remained a threat throughout, despite his side being a man down in the second half.

DM, Khéphren Thuram (Nice) – The young midfielder continues to evolve into an effective and more reliable option for Nice, putting Rosario and Lemina under pressure. Reading the game well throughout the late loss to MHSC, he helped keep the pressure on with his mobility plus some precise and well judged passing.

CM, Flavien Tait (Rennes) – His transformation from skilful inside forward, who was on the verge of failing to make the step up from Angers to Rennes, to Rolls-Royce central midfielder is arguably the low-key story of the year in Ligue 1. As one of many outstanding displays, his faints, vision and deft use of the ball helped Rennes beat Lyon 4-1.

AM, Lovro Majer (Rennes) – Nonchalantly, ran the game as Rennes tore OL apart. Dropped into pockets around the area and in the channels, beat men for fun, picked clever passes for forwards and instigated some slippery interplay. It was his looped pass that created the second, he initiated the counter for 3-0 and he started the move for the fourth.

WF, Neymar (PSG) – An unstoppable first half double won the game for PSG at Bordeaux. This wasn’t the focused and intense type of display that beat Lyon, Metz and Lille but the supremely talented virtuoso performer who’s simply too good for everyone else.

WF, Benjamin Bourigeaud (Rennes) – His deliveries were typically on point as Rennes beat OL 4-1 and one such corner assisted the opener for Laborde and he was also Majer’s right hand man in moving the ball sharply and smartly around the box.

ST, Kylian Mbappé (PSG) – Stole in to tap home for 3-0 in the second half as PSG won 3-2 at Bordeaux, having assisted both of Neymar’s strikes before the break. A backheel flick to set up the second was the game’s highlight.
