With the start to this season’s Europa League campaign around the corner, Lyon have submitted their 25-man squad to UEFA – including defender Marcelo, despite the Brazilian’s banishment to the reserves.
Marcelo have been demoted to the reserve team after a calamitous performance against Angers three weeks ago, and for what was perceived as “inappropriate behaviour” in the dressing room in the aftermath to the game. The centre-back was effectively placed on the transfer list for the rest of the summer window.
Nevertheless, L’Équipe report that the two parties have failed to come to an agreement over a contract termination, with the Brazilian denying any wrongdoing. The 34-year-old’s current contract runs until the end of the 2022/23 season, having extended last March following some impressive performances under Rudi Garcia.
The defender now appears to have been reinstated, for the club’s European campaign at least.
