Speaking to L’Équipe, Marseille president Pablo Longoria discussed the style of play under Jorge Sampaoli this season, explaining: “We are not a team built to be physical in a league that is.”
Are you happy with what you see on the pitch?
“I’m happy when the team follows the style of play for which it was built. You have to be consistent, that’s what we’ve tried to explain to supporters. We must find a balance between a demand for results, which is high because we are OM, and patience for a young team still under construction – one of the youngest in Europe.
Has Jorge Sampaoli’s flamboyant Marseille, so enjoyable to watch this summer, gone away?
“We are a team built to have control of the game, not to play transition football. Right now, it’s true, we lack attacking efficiency. When we analyse the data, we’ve seen that, in many matches, we could’ve scored more goals. There’s a balance to be struck between our offensive output and our defensive security. We have to keep control of the game because we are not a team built to be physical in a league that is.”
